Prada bag – Check. Christian Louboutin Pumps – Check. M.A.C. Lip Gloss – Check. You’ve got all the right accessories to complement your flyness – but wait! What about the most important accessory – your man?
Your boytoy is an accessory in your life, so he should dress the part. Think about it… you’d never see someone like Angelina Jolie walk the red carpet with Flava Flav on their arm.
If your man has some sense of style don’t fret – he doesn’t need to be a poster boy for men’s fashion. Despite how much things have changed, women are still expected to have more fashion sense than most men. So how can you tell whether you should just accept your man’s style or make him change? Here are some things to consider:
Your job calls for it. You work at a high profile company where everyone dresses in the flyest outfits or smartest business suits. If NOTHING in his wardrobe is presentable to come to work functions with you maybe you should talk to him about his style.
Your lifestyle calls for it. Your mom is a designer, your best friend a stylist and your cousins own the hottest nightclub in the city. This means you are constantly surrounded by glamorous people. Would you feel comfortable bringing Joe Plumber around? Probably not! You may be able to avoid bringing a significant other to work functions, or disguise his lack of swagger in a nice suit at the annual Christmas party, but you can’t fool your friends and family.
You’re an artist. Some lifestyles tend to have a much more laissez-faire attitude about style. While lots of artists are known for their funky trendy looks they tend to not judge those who aren’t as creative. If his style doesn’t blend in don’t worry… nobody else will.
It makes you look better. Shallow as it may sound, some people like having that homely friend around. Admit it. You know you always had that friend whose hair wasn’t as bouncy as yours, her clothes weren’t as fashionable or her makeup didn’t pop like yours did – and you liked it because it made you look extra fly! If this is the case, and your man’s lack of style just draws more attention to your chicness then keep him! We all need an ego boost once in a while.
If you do find that his looks are cramping your style DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Take him shopping, get him a subscription to GQ or find him a fashion icon to take note from. If none of these tricks work and his lack of fashion sense is cramping your style, perhaps he’s not the one for you. Think about it…
