Winter months can leave skin thirsting for moisture in various degrees of severity. For some women, not even the richest of creams can do the trick. For others, just a slight change is enough to remedy dry and uncomfortable-looking skin. In either case, a great supplement to winter skin care is moisturizing makeup.
In general, this means a tinted moisturizer for the face and non-drying lip color. While there are a few full-coverage moisturizing makeups, a tinted moisturizer is still the most effective and beneficial for drier skin. Besides hydration, they have SPF protection and are full of antioxidants. Unlike most full-coverage makeups that emphasize concerns (even while they try to combat them), they leave the skin looking soft and luminous.
If fuller coverage is an absolute must for you, then try mixing half of your regular foundation with half-tinted moisturizer. This can make a big difference between having flaky winter skin and a soft, smooth complexion.
Two of the best tinted moisturizers out there are by Laura Mercier ($32.00) and Smashbox ($30.00). Laura Mercier has a sheer, lightweight, but buildable formula depending on your coverage needs. There is also an oil-free formula for those that prefer a less dewy complexion. Smashbox uses a unique “citrus honey moisturization” technology as well as peptides and vitamins to help protect skin and prevent aging. This product leaves the skin luminous and youthful.
For those who prefer powder formulas, an alternative is Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder ($59.00). This is the first anti-aging powder that incorporates skin care. The minerals, amino acids, and peptides all work synergistically to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and the patented hydration technology keeps the skin safe from the drying effects of cold air.
Lips are the other victims of cold winter air. Foregoing lip color in favor of lip balm is a popular option. Tinted lip balms can provide a touch of color while protecting lips and is an especially great way to make sure lips stay hydrated. Korres Lip Butter ($9.00) with shea butter and rice wax help to seal in moisture and works as an anti-inflammatory, giving a pop of lively color for those dreary days.
Depending on the shade, this product can be used on cheeks as well. However, there are moisturizing lip formulas that provide a denser and richer color, such as DuWop Tinted Prime Venom ($20.00). This lip treatment uses jojoba, avocado, and macadamia nut oils to lock in moisture while providing more color to the lip.

I’ve always wondered what a tinted moisturizer was. So I guess I need to stop using it as a night time moisturizer.
Thanks, Sara!
